Most “best smart thermostat” guides assume you have a furnace with ductwork. Plenty of Canadian homes don’t, especially condos and older buildings with electric baseboard heat. Those need a completely different device, Ecobee and Nest just won’t work on them.

The short version

Central forced-air (furnace/AC with ductwork): the Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium is the strongest all-around pick. Electric baseboard heat: the Sinopé TH1123WF is the better-built option (proportional heat output, not just on/off), though Mysa is the direct partner in BC Hydro’s new free-thermostat program if you’re in BC and want to register for that instead.

Not sure which you have? Baseboard heaters are individual metal strips along the floor of each room with no central furnace or ductwork. If you have a furnace, floor vents, and a single thermostat controlling the whole house, you have central forced-air.

BC Hydro is giving away up to 5 free smart thermostats to customers with electric baseboard heat, announced July 6, 2026. Quick reality check: it’s BC Hydro customers only, baseboard heat only, and shipping doesn’t start until October. For everyone else, here’s what’s actually worth buying, checked against real Canadian pricing and owner reviews, not spec sheets.

Our picks

★ Our pickEcobee Smart Thermostat Premium mounted on a wall
BEST OVERALL / CENTRAL FORCED-AIR

Ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium

The most complete smart thermostat for furnace-and-ductwork homes.

What we don’t like

  • 2 Canadian reviewers needed a $25 C-wire adapter after the included power kit didn’t work
  • Won’t work on baseboard heat at all. Confirm your heating type first
Sinopé TH1123WF smart thermostat for electric baseboard heating
BEST FOR ELECTRIC BASEBOARD HEAT

Sinopé TH1123WF

Proportional heat output instead of simple on/off, and no hub required.

What we don’t like

  • Sinopé’s own app has glitchy pairing for some reviewers. Pairing through Apple HomeKit worked better for at least one
  • No BC Hydro free-thermostat page yet (Mysa has one). Check directly before assuming you can register
Honeywell Home T9 smart thermostat
BEST BUDGET / CENTRAL FORCED-AIR

Honeywell Home T9 (RCHT9510WF)

A cheaper way into a central system, with a real reliability caveat.

What we don’t like

  • One reviewer went through 3 units in 4 years, each failing just after the warranty ended
  • Locks out advanced settings like heat-pump/furnace changeover timing. Needs the Pro version for that
Mysa smart thermostat for electric baseboard heaters
BEST FOR BC HYDRO’S FREE PROGRAM

Mysa Smart Thermostat for Electric Baseboard Heaters

The easiest baseboard setup, and one of the two brands BC Hydro is giving away for free.

What we don’t like

  • Switches heat fully on or off rather than modulating it, which can mean less even heat in very cold regions
  • Needs a 4-wire install. Won’t work on older 2-wire wiring without an electrician

Central heat vs. electric baseboard: which do you have?

Central forced-air Electric baseboard
How to tell Furnace, ductwork, floor/wall vents, one thermostat for the whole house Individual metal heating strips along the floor of each room, no ductwork
Voltage Low-voltage (24VAC), needs a C-wire or power kit Line-voltage (120V or 240V), a completely different wiring category
Works with Ecobee/Nest? Yes No, not without extra hardware most buyers don’t want
Works with Mysa/Sinopé? No Yes
Typical Canadian homes Detached houses, newer builds with ductwork Condos, apartments, older builds, much of BC and Quebec

How BC Hydro’s free smart thermostat program actually works

On July 6, 2026, BC Hydro opened registration for a program giving away free smart thermostats to residential customers with electric baseboard heat, part of its $1-billion, three-year Power Smart 2.0 conservation plan. It’s real and it’s worth using if you qualify, but the details matter:

1

Who qualifies: BC Hydro residential customers with electric baseboard heating specifically. This isn’t a general Canada-wide giveaway, and it isn’t for central forced-air homes.

2

What you get: Up to 5 free smart thermostats, manufactured by Mysa or Sinopé, with free shipping, ordered through the companies’ own platforms once available.

3

When: Registration opened July 6, 2026. The devices themselves ship starting October 2026, this is a notify-me signup right now, not an instant order.

4

The catch that’s actually a bonus: the thermostats come pre-enrolled in BC Hydro’s Peak Saver program, which pays $50 a year ($100 if you’re income-qualified) for allowing brief temperature reductions during peak demand periods. You can override it any time.

As of this writing, Mysa already has a live registration page for the program. Sinopé’s own site doesn’t yet, though the company has publicly confirmed its participation. If you’re a BC Hydro customer with baseboard heat, register directly with BC Hydro rather than waiting on either manufacturer’s page to catch up.

What if you’re not a BC Hydro customer with baseboard heat?

Most of Canada is buying, not registering for anything free. The good news is the category split above still applies everywhere: figure out which heating system you have first, then pick from the matching column. Sinopé and Mysa both sell nationally on Amazon.ca regardless of where you live or which utility bills you, the BC Hydro program only affects whether one specific version might cost you nothing if you happen to qualify.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an Ecobee or Nest thermostat with electric baseboard heat?

Not without extra hardware most homeowners don’t want to install. Baseboard heat runs on line voltage (120V or 240V) directly through the thermostat, while Ecobee and Nest are built for low-voltage (24VAC) central systems. Using them on baseboard heat requires a separate line-voltage relay, which adds cost and complexity most buyers skip by just choosing a baseboard-specific thermostat instead.

Do I need an electrician to install a smart baseboard thermostat?

If your home already has 4-wire wiring to the thermostat (common in newer construction), most people can do it themselves following the included instructions. If you only have 2-wire wiring, as some older homes do, you may need an electrician to add a neutral wire, or you’ll need a model like the Sinopé TH1123WF that explicitly supports 2-wire installs.

Is the BC Hydro free thermostat program available outside British Columbia?

No. It’s specific to BC Hydro residential customers with electric baseboard heat. Other provinces and utilities have their own separate energy programs, but this specific free-thermostat offer is BC Hydro only.
